Amazon Adventure: Chapter Seven
Chapter 7: The humid air clung to Maya's skin like a damp veil as she moved through the verdant jungle. Each breath felt thick and heavy in her lungs, amplified by the stillness that had settled over the valley. Only the melodic calls of emerald parrots echoed through the trees, a hypnotic soundtrack to her solitary journey. Maya had been wandering for days, or perhaps it was weeks now. Time ebbed and flowed like the muddy river she followed, meaningless and meandering. Hunger clawed at her belly, her pack long emptied of the dried meat and nuts that had sustained her. She subsisted now on bitter berries, starchy tubers dug from the earth, and the occasional brightly plumed prize snared in her traps. Food was scarce in this part of the jungle, hunted out by predators and tribesmen alike. She had survived ambush and fever, wounds that should have killed, yet still she walked on.
